Colnago Continues Partnership with Gazprom Rusvelo: The new team bikes and colours were revealed late December at the unveiling of the 2017 Gazprom Rusvelo team presentation.
Colnago will continue to bring the best Italian bikes to the Russian team in the form of the K-Zero and new Colnago Concept aero bike.
The team is now the highest-ranking Russian team (Katusha has registered as Swiss for the 2017 season), with a full roster consisting of only Russian riders. As well as an international representation on the world stage, the team’s most important values are to foremost support and develop cycling in Russia for young and talented cyclists. Gazprom and Rusvelo have confirmed their partnership for four more years to 2020 – giving team members the opportunity to train for and target the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The team had a great 2016 season, with seven victories on the world stage. A huge surprise was a wild card entry to the Giro d’Italia. The team proved capable of holding it’s own in the World Tour rankings with Gazprom RusVelo rider Alexander Foliforov securing a stage win to upset the big favourites in the 10.8km uphill time trial stage. The 24-year-old has re-signed with Gazprom RusVelo for 2017.
The biggest transfer of the team is the signing of Tinkoff rider, Pavel Brutt – Russian time trial specialist with thirteen grand tours under his belt.
“Gazprom – RusVelo is a new chapter in my career. I am very happy that I’ll be a part of this team, they spent a great season and it looks like Gazprom – RusVelo is on the right track. I hope that I will have a chance to bring the team to victory and it’s going to be a successful season,” – says Pavel Brutt.
The twenty two rostered riders are all of Russian nationality. The team was formed under the concept of a single-nation squad. This year, the riders consist of six GC riders, four sprint specialists and twelve all-rounders. With another year under their belts including their first world-tour debut and more experience then ever, the opportunities for the team are open to a wider range of races. Russian rider Alexander Serov who has ridden with the team for five seasons has finished his career as a rider and will be sports director for the 2017 season.
