Since it's launch the Continental GP4000S has been the benchmark tyre for performance road use. Possessing an amazing combination of grip, speed and longevity it was a perfect choice for racing, training, sportives or everyday use. Sadly Continental have ceased production of the original GP4000s.
Continental have now released the much anticipated version 2 replacement, the GP4000S II. It's hard to believe that such an excellent product could be improved and thankfully it's more of an enhancement of a great tyre rather than a complete redesign. As the saying goes "if it an't broke, don't fix it".
The biggest difference is the use of coloured side walls to add a bit of wow factor to complement the superb grip and durability of Continental's exclusive Black Chili compound. Apparently the colours have been pantone matched to Fizik saddle and bartape colours which should please those that like colour coordination. The sidewall colours don't go all the way to the edge of the tread as all other coloured tyres do, but is a thin line that shows just above the rim giving a stylishly minimalist look. The use of BlackChili compound means that the tread cannot come in any other colour but black.
Continental's superb BlackChili compound continues to provide amazing grip, low rolling resistance and durability while Vectran technology provides excellent puncture protection. Vectran is a 21st century multifilament polymer thread that has a tensile strength that is 5 times stronger than steel but weighs less than a nylon alternative. It provides reinforcement against punctures caused by glass and other road debris with only a negligible weight penalty.
Somehow Continental have achieved the seemingly impossible and made a great tyre even better
The running properties of the rubber compound of a tyre are largely determined by three interacting factors: static friction (grip), rolling resistance and durability. The dilemma is that you improve one of these factors, and in turn, worsen at least one other factor. A tyre with maximum grip wears out faster and rolls slower. If one makes the tyre faster or more durable, then this in turn reduces grip.
Continental refine newly developed synthetic rubbers with natural rubber with the proven high-performance tread compound and then combine these rubbers with special nanometric carbon soot particles, which are optimised in shape and surface properties for best uses for the intended tyre. The result is Black Chili Compound which produces an unprecedented level of performance. The speed and grip advantages are very noticeable. Compared to the previous best Activated Silica Compound, BlackChili tyres have 26% less rolling resistance, a 30% higher grip and a 5% increase in durability. The complex compound technology is so sensitive that tyres with BlackChili Compound can only be produced exclusively in Germany at Continental's Korbach factory.
Vectran is spun from Vectra liquid crystal polymer, which results in a thread that is thermoplastic and has multifilaments. This semicristalline material is harder then aramid, has five times higher tensile strength than steel and in addition, is also lighter than comparable nylon thread. Vectran maintains these attributes even in the most adverse weather conditions and results in a significant improvement in puncture resistance.

More About The Manufacturer Continental
More than 100 years experience has made Continental a unique company within the industry. Continental is the only German bicycle tyre manufacturer to produce its tyres in Germany.
The technology and development center in Korbach develops revolutionary new technologies such as the unbeatable Black Chili compound and the ultimate Vectran™ breaker anti-puncture technology, both used at the top end of race sport. These technologies demand sophisticated processes to ensure superior end-product quality, and these innovations as well as the new Protection and RaceSport technology for MTB tyres, can only be manufactured in our factory in Germany. As a global player, Continental also maintains high-tech production facilities outside of Germany, where Continental tyres are produced for you with an equal degree of care and dedication. One thing all Continental bicycle tyres have in common is that they are developed in the technology center in Korbach, Germany, where they also undergo strict inspection.
