Q. How much travel does the Topstone Carbon have?
A. That depends on many things. We say it has around 30mm measured at the saddle, but the Kingpin system consists of a series of flexing frame members that all work in concert, rather than a set of links with defined stop points, like a traditional suspension setup. Heavier riders or big forces could get it to flex more, while lighter riders and forces will cause it to flex less. The frames are size-specific, designed to deliver the appropriate amount of deflection for the average rider for a given size.
Q. How does Kingpin differ from other flexing systems like SAVE or IsoSpeed?
A. The key difference is the Kingpin pivot in the centre of the seat tube. It delivers several degrees of rotation which allows both the seat tube and the rear stays to flex far more than they could if the stays were fixed to the seat-tube. It delivers a significant amount of deflection at the seat, which offers more seated comfort than any other road bike. It also allows for a small amount of deflection, or travel, at the rear axle, which improves traction, comfort and control when you’re out of the saddle. This is also the primary difference between Kingpin and IsoSpeed, Trek’s seat-tube decoupler system. IsoSpeed allows the seat tube to flex within an otherwise extremely rigid frame, so it only provides seated comfort (and not as much as Kingpin).
Q. Does the Kingpin system require any set-up or tuning?
A. None at all. Our Proportional Response construction changes the carbon layup, and the shape and dimensions of the frame tubes for each frame size, ensuring that riders of different sizes will experience similar suspension feel. Of course, this means that on any given size, heavier riders will experience more deflection, but even the lightest riders will notice a significant comfort improvement over any other road bike they’ve ridden.
Q. Do you notice any bobbing or pedal-induced actuation of the suspension? Or does it feel un- balanced with suspension in the rear and a rigid fork?
A. No. The effect of the suspension system is almost imperceptible. Until you hit a bump, thatis. On smooth roads, it motors along like a normal road bike, but when things get rough, it’s incredible how much it absorbs. It feels balanced and poised in every situation.
Q. Do all Topstone Carbons share the same frame?
A. Yes. Same sweet BallisTec Carbon frame and fork on all models. And with Topstone, our engineers altered the BallisTec construction to prioritize durability over gram counting, so riders can push the limits with confidence.
Q. Why doesn’t Topstone Carbon have an Oliver fork like Slate, or an Ocho?
A. The Topstone frame design isn’t compatible with the Oliver fork, and the current Ocho has too much travel for road use. Maybe someday we’ll make an Ocho Oliver. Olcho? Ochliver?
Q. Is Topstone Carbon compatible with 650 wheels?
A. Yes. Its impressive clearance allows you to run up to 48mm tires with 650 wheels if you want.
