We’ve spent the last few days putting the brand-new Garmin Varia RearVue 820 (released February 4) through its paces. Our first impression?
It’s bright, sleek, and noticeably lightweight. While Garmin includes a variety of mounts in the box, we opted to use the Framesandgear mount
already installed on James’s C68.
What is the Varia RearVue 820?
In short, the Garmin RearVue 820 is a cutting-edge, multipurpose radar and tail light designed with one goal: total rider awareness. It alerts you
to approaching vehicles—including cars, trucks, other cyclists, and even animals—well before you can see or hear them. The unit transmits real-time
data to your Garmin head unit, allowing you to visually track traffic and receive audible alerts. With the new 820, Garmin has added several customization
options to tailor these alerts to your specific route.
First Thoughts: What’s New?
The 820 features significant upgrades, primarily centered around software enhancements and more sensitive radar tracking. Garmin has switched
to USB-C charging to stay current and extended the battery life for longer rides. Despite the internal upgrades, it retains a sleek, unobtrusive aesthetic
that looks right at home on any high-end frame.
Key Benefits & Performance
We tested the Garmin 820 on well-lit rides, and even on the longest stretches, the intense 100-lumen rear light was
exceptionally visible. The wider radar beam is a noticeable improvement over the previous model; thanks to the increased
scanning angle, it successfully detected vehicles from 175m away (and occasionally further), even on slight bends. A standout
feature is the detailed vehicle data. You can now see the exact location and relative size (small, medium, or large) of approaching
vehicles on your head unit—incredibly handy for knowing exactly when a large truck is about to overtake. The Smart Brake Light
is another excellent safety addition. The unit detects deceleration and triggers a high-intensity flashing pattern to alert drivers behind
you; it triggered reliably for every speed drop of 5km/h or more. Battery performance lived up to the marketing, losing only a few
percentage points over a five-hour ride. Garmin claims up to 24 hours in Day Flash mode and up to 30 hours in Radar-only mode.
Is It For You?
At $469.99 AUD, the RearVue 820 is a premium investment. If you are on a tight budget, the older RTL515 remains a solid choice,
but for those who prioritize the latest tech and maximum safety, the 820 is the new benchmark.
Compatibility: It pairs seamlessly with the Edge 540/840/1040 (including Solar models), the new Edge 550, 850, and 1050, as well
as Garmin smartwatches for voice and haptic (vibration) alerts.
Final Verdict
The team here believes the 820 RearVue is absolutely worth it if safety is your top priority. While the entry price is high, the peace of
mind provided by advanced vehicle tracking and "see-and-be-seen" brightness is hard to beat, especially for commuters and road riders
in high-traffic areas. It’s easy to install, connects effortlessly to older Garmin Edge and Fenix devices, and looks great on any bike.
