Shimano has replaced its road pedal and cleat platform at the Dura-Ace (PD-R9300) level, and for the first time designed the pedal, cleat and S-PHYRE shoe together as one system.
The headline change is a 2.3mm reduction in cleat stack height, which brings the rider's foot closer to the pedal axle for better power transfer and stability. Dura-Ace PD-R9300 is the stiffer, lighter-spinning of the two tiers (11% stiffer and 53% lower rotational resistance than Ultegra R8200). Shimano has rebuilt its top road pedal tier, Dura-Ace PD-R9300, and paired it with a redesigned SPD-SLR cleat. The naming shift matters: the outgoing cleat was SPD-SL, the new one is SPD-SLR, and it isn't a like-for-like swap. Shimano designed the pedal, the cleat and the new S-PHYRE road shoe as a single system rather than three separate updates, which is why the biggest performance gain (a lower stack height) only shows up in full when all three parts of the system are used together.
Shimano built this generation around one goal: get the rider's foot as close to the pedal axle as possible without compromising stability. That's a stack-height problem that spans three separate products, the pedal body, the cleat, and the sole of the shoe, so Shimano engineered all three at once rather than updating the pedal in isolation.
